Where Kolkata gets dressed
The markets, streets and neighbourhoods that set the tone for street fashion in Kolkata, and what each one is good for.
New Market
The old Hogg Market and the lanes around it. You can get anything here if you are willing to walk.
Gariahat
Pavement stalls and sari shops on the same footpath. South Kolkata does its Pujo shopping here.
Park Street
Restaurants, bars, and the December lights. The city dresses up to walk down it.
Dakshinapan
State emporiums in one complex. Handloom from across the country at fixed prices.
What the weather allows
Sticky from April through October, then a soft winter that the city treats as an event. Monkey caps are a meme. The shawls and jackets that come out in December are not.
When the city dresses up
Durga Puja in the autumn, when tradition asks for new clothes each day from Sashthi to Dashami. Then Park Street at Christmas, and the book fair in winter.
Names to know
Tant and jamdani are the local cottons, light enough for the weather and now worn as shirts, dresses and saris with sneakers. A white kurta with a good pair of jeans is the closest thing the city has to a uniform.
Shops and labels change. This was last checked in September 2026. If something here has closed, moved or opened, tell us and we will fix it.
The Kolkata fit
A red bordered white sari with a contrast blouse and silver on Ashtami. A panjabi with rolled sleeves, straight jeans and kolhapuris on every other day.
Would you rate it?Kolkata on Vybemo
A fit posted from Kolkata is rated out of 10 by real people across India. After 48 hours it is scored. The number stays with the person who posted it, and the public sees a word. How the rating works
Kolkata can also take its place in the weekly city battles, where fits are rated blind and the result comes out on Sunday. How city battles work
