Where Lucknow gets dressed
The markets, streets and neighbourhoods that set the tone for street fashion in Lucknow, and what each one is good for.
Hazratganj
The old promenade. People still come here in the evening just to walk.
Chowk
The old city, where the chikan work is actually done and sold.
Aminabad
Dense, loud, cheap and useful.
Gomti Nagar
The newer side of town, with the malls and cafes.
What the weather allows
Hot summers, a humid monsoon and a foggy, properly cold winter. Mulmul and fine cotton for half the year, shawls and wool for the rest.
When the city dresses up
Eid and the winter wedding season are the two big moments. Both involve a great deal of white and pastel embroidery.
Names to know
Chikankari is hand embroidery, traditionally white thread on white cotton. The current generation wears it as short kurtas with jeans, as shirts, and oversized with sneakers.
Shops and labels change. This was last checked in September 2026. If something here has closed, moved or opened, tell us and we will fix it.
The Lucknow fit
A short white chikan kurta, sleeves pushed up, over straight jeans with sneakers. It looks right at a college, a cafe and a family dinner, all on the same day.
